Spanish Civil War
1930s Iberian conflict
The Spanish Civil War was the 1936–1939 conflict between Republican forces defending Spain's elected government and Nationalist rebels led by Francisco Franco.
The war became a proxy battlefield for fascism and democracy, with Germany and Italy supporting Franco while the Soviet Union aided Republicans.
Franco's victory established a dictatorship lasting until 1975.
