Orwellian

Oppressively state-controlled

Orwellian describes conditions resembling those in George Orwell's dystopian novel *1984*—government surveillance, propaganda, manipulation of language, and the denial of obvious truths.

The word is almost always pejorative: Orwellian doublespeak, an Orwellian surveillance state.

It often suggests that authorities are controlling thought through language or calling things by their opposite: war is peace, freedom is slavery.
