tramping

Stomping through mud

Tramping is walking with heavy, steady steps, often suggesting weariness or determination: We could hear him tramping up the stairs.

In New Zealand, tramping means hiking or backpacking through wilderness areas—what Americans call hiking and Britons call rambling.

The word can also describe living as a vagrant, wandering from place to place without settled work or home.
