Winston Smith
Winston Smith is the protagonist of George Orwell's dystopian novel *Nineteen Eighty-Four* (1949), a low-ranking Party member who secretly rebels against totalitarian rule.
The name has become shorthand for an ordinary person crushed by authoritarian systems, or someone who questions official reality while outwardly conforming: Every whistleblower starts as a Winston Smith, scribbling forbidden thoughts.
