proles

Laboring class members

Proles is the plural of prole, an informal and often dismissive term for members of the working class or common people.

The word is a clipping of proletariat.

George Orwell's *1984* gave it lasting currency, where proles are the masses kept ignorant and politically inert: The proles don't care about politics.

The term carries condescension—viewing ordinary people as unsophisticated or easily manipulated.
