Ensign

Lowest commissioned rank

An ensign is a flag or banner, especially one indicating nationality on a ship.

In military usage, an ensign is the lowest commissioned officer rank in the U.S.

Navy and Coast Guard, equivalent to a second lieutenant in the Army.

Historically, an ensign was the soldier who carried a regiment's flag into battle—hence the transfer to a junior officer rank.
