A redshirt is a college athlete who sits out a season of competition while practicing with the team, preserving a year of athletic eligibility.
The verb means to hold a player out this way: He was redshirted his freshman year.
Separately, in science fiction fandom, a redshirt is a minor character introduced only to be killed off—from the expendable crew members in *Star Trek* who wore red uniforms.
