Dystopia

Oppressive imaginary society

A dystopia is an imagined society characterized by oppression, suffering, or injustice—the opposite of utopia.

Dystopian fiction depicts futures where totalitarian control, environmental collapse, or technological abuse have created nightmarish conditions: Nineteen Eighty-Four remains the definitive dystopia.

The word also describes real situations approaching such bleakness: The refugee camp was a dystopia of mud and despair.
