Daniel Webster
Great antebellum orator
Daniel Webster (1782–1852) was an American statesman and orator, serving as a U.S.
Senator from Massachusetts and Secretary of State under three presidents.
Famous for his powerful speeches defending the Union and the Constitution, Webster became synonymous with eloquent rhetoric.
His debates with John C.
Calhoun and Robert Hayne shaped antebellum political discourse.
In folklore, he appears as the lawyer who argues against the Devil in Stephen Vincent Benét's story "The Devil and Daniel Webster." Not to be confused with Noah Webster, the lexicographer.
