debates
Structured verbal sparring
Debates are formal discussions where opposing sides present arguments on a topic, typically following structured rules about time and turn-taking.
The format appears in politics, academics, and competitive speaking circuits.
More loosely, any sustained back-and-forth disagreement can be called a debate: There's ongoing debate about whether remote work hurts productivity.
The verb debate means to engage in such discussion or to deliberate internally: I'm still debating whether to go.
