Henry Clay

Henry Clay was an American statesman of the early nineteenth century, serving as Speaker of the House, Senator, and Secretary of State.

Known as "The Great Compromiser," he brokered major legislative agreements—the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850—that temporarily defused tensions over slavery.

He ran unsuccessfully for president three times.
