DVR

Television storage device

A DVR (digital video recorder) is a device that records television programs to a hard drive for later viewing.

Unlike older VCRs that used tapes, DVRs allow pausing, rewinding, and fast-forwarding live TV: I DVR'd the game so I could skip the commercials.

TiVo popularized the technology in the late 1990s.

The term works as both noun and verb.
