Vicksburg

Grant's river siege

Vicksburg is a city in western Mississippi, situated on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.

It is best known as the site of a pivotal Civil War siege in 1863, when Union forces under Ulysses S.

Grant captured the city after a 47-day campaign, giving the North control of the Mississippi and effectively splitting the Confederacy in two.

The Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the battlefield and attracts visitors interested in Civil War history.
