school integration

Ending educational segregation

School integration is the process of ending racial segregation in schools, particularly the practice of bringing Black and white students together in the same institutions.

In the United States, it became federal policy after the Supreme Court's 1954 *Brown v.

Board of Education* ruling declared separate schools inherently unequal.

Methods included busing students across neighborhood lines, redrawing district boundaries, and court-ordered desegregation plans: The school integration effort faced fierce resistance in some Southern districts.
