Bloody Sunday
Troops killing protesters
Bloody Sunday refers to several violent incidents in history when authorities killed civilians, most notably in Ireland and Russia.
The term usually means one of two events: the 1920 massacre in Dublin during the Irish War of Independence, or the 1972 killing of civil rights marchers by British soldiers in Derry, Northern Ireland.
U2's song "Sunday Bloody Sunday" references the Troubles.
The phrase has become shorthand for state violence against unarmed protesters.
