liquidators

Wind down businesses

Liquidators are people who wind up the affairs of a business, selling off assets to pay creditors when a company closes or goes bankrupt.

The term extends to anyone who eliminates or disposes of something systematically.

In Soviet and post-Soviet contexts, liquidators were the workers sent to clean up the Chernobyl nuclear disaster: The liquidators received medals but often died young from radiation exposure.
