Three Mile Island
Pennsylvania nuclear accident
Three Mile Island is a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, site of the worst nuclear accident in American history in 1979.
A partial meltdown of one reactor released radioactive gases, though health effects remain disputed.
The incident became shorthand for nuclear power's dangers and effectively halted new plant construction in the United States for decades: After Three Mile Island, public support for nuclear energy collapsed.
