red forest
Scarlet tree stand
Red forest refers to a stand of trees that has turned reddish-brown after dying, typically from radiation, fire, or chemical exposure.
The term gained prominence from the area near Chernobyl where pine trees absorbed lethal doses of radiation and turned russet before dying: The red forest remains one of the most contaminated places on Earth.
Similar discoloration occurs in forests killed by bark beetles or wildfire.
