Chaldean

Old Babylonian native

Chaldean refers to the ancient civilization of Chaldea in southern Mesopotamia, or to its people and language.

The Chaldeans ruled Babylon in its final period of glory.

Because Babylonian priests were famous for astronomy and astrology, Chaldean came to mean an astrologer or soothsayer.

Today, Chaldean often identifies members of the Chaldean Catholic Church, an Eastern church centered in Iraq: the Chaldean community in Detroit.
