James Cook

Famous British navigator

James Cook was an eighteenth-century British navigator and explorer who led three voyages of discovery in the Pacific Ocean.

He mapped coastlines from New Zealand to Hawaii, charted the eastern coast of Australia, and searched for the hypothetical southern continent.

Cook was killed in Hawaii in 1779 during a confrontation with islanders.

His name appears in place names across the Pacific: the Cook Islands, Cook Strait, Mount Cook.
