Pinochet
Santiago's military strongman
Pinochet refers to Augusto Pinochet, the Chilean military dictator who ruled from 1973 to 1990 after overthrowing the elected socialist president Salvador Allende in a U.S.-backed coup.
His regime killed thousands of political opponents and became synonymous with state terror in Latin America.
The name now evokes authoritarian rule and human rights abuses: The protesters compared the new measures to Pinochet-era tactics.
