military junta
Generals seizing power
A military junta is a government controlled by military officers who have seized power, typically through a coup d'état.
The term comes from Spanish, where junta means a council or committee.
Military juntas often suspend constitutional rights and rule by decree: The military junta dissolved parliament and imposed martial law.
The word carries connotations of authoritarianism and illegitimate rule.
