Atacama

South American desert

Atacama refers to a desert in northern Chile, one of the driest places on Earth.

Some areas have gone centuries without recorded rainfall.

The name appears in compounds: the Atacama Desert, the Atacama Trench (an oceanic depression off the coast).

Scientists use the region to simulate Martian conditions.
