Hugo Chávez

Hugo Chávez was the president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013.

A former military officer who led a failed coup in 1992, he later won election and implemented "Bolivarian socialism"—nationalizing industries, expanding social programs, and consolidating power.

He was a polarizing figure: revered by supporters as a champion of the poor, condemned by critics as an authoritarian who damaged Venezuela's economy and institutions.
