Asian elephant
Smaller-eared tusked mammal
The Asian elephant is the smaller of the two elephant species, native to forests and grasslands across South and Southeast Asia.
Distinguished from African elephants by smaller ears, a more rounded back, and a single "finger" at the trunk tip rather than two.
Asian elephants have been domesticated for thousands of years for labor, warfare, and ceremony: Temple elephants are central to religious festivals in India.
