caparison

Ornamental horse covering

A caparison is an ornamental covering for a horse, especially the elaborate decorative cloth draped over warhorses in medieval tournaments and ceremonies.

The word extends to any rich or fancy covering or trappings.

As a verb, to caparison is to outfit a horse with such finery, or more broadly to dress someone in splendid attire: The knights rode caparisoned horses into the tournament grounds.
