Manassas

Virginia battle site

Manassas is a city in northern Virginia, about thirty miles southwest of Washington, D.C.

It is best known as the site of two major Civil War battles—the First and Second Battles of Bull Run (1861 and 1862)—which Confederates called the Battles of Manassas.

The name now evokes both the historical battlefields and the modern Washington suburb: We drove through Manassas on our way to the Shenandoah Valley.
