diptera

Diptera is the taxonomic order comprising flies and mosquitoes—insects with a single pair of functional wings.

The name comes from Greek for "two wings." In scientific contexts, diptera appears lowercase when used descriptively rather than as the formal order name: The region's diptera populations have exploded this summer. (Capitalized Diptera is the formal taxonomic order.)
