worldbuilder
Fictional reality designer
A worldbuilder is someone who creates fictional worlds—the settings, histories, cultures, and rules that form the backdrop for stories, games, or other creative works.
The term applies to novelists crafting fantasy realms, game designers developing virtual environments, or tabletop enthusiasts mapping imaginary continents: Tolkien was the ultimate worldbuilder.
Worldbuilding as a practice has become increasingly recognized as a craft distinct from storytelling itself.
