New Bedford

Massachusetts coastal city

New Bedford is a city in southeastern Massachusetts, historically one of the world's most important whaling ports.

The city's 19th-century prosperity from whale oil made it among the wealthiest in America; Herman Melville's *Moby-Dick* opens there.

Today it remains a significant commercial fishing port: The boat docked at New Bedford with a hold full of scallops.
