cowbane

Toxic wetland plant

Cowbane is any of several poisonous plants in the carrot family, particularly water hemlock, that grow in wet areas and are highly toxic to livestock and humans.

The name reflects the danger these plants pose to grazing cattle.

All parts of the plant contain cicutoxin, making cowbane one of the most poisonous native plants in North America.

The rancher fenced off the marshy area where cowbane was growing.
