amanita

Often poisonous mushroom

Amanita is a genus of mushrooms that includes some of the most toxic species known, such as the death cap and destroying angel, as well as the iconic red-and-white fly agaric.

Some amanitas are edible, but the genus is dangerous for amateur foragers because deadly and harmless species can look similar: Never eat a wild amanita unless you're absolutely certain of the identification. (Capitalized Amanita is the formal genus name.)
