wale
Fabric's raised line
A wale is a raised ridge or rib on a surface, especially one of the lengthwise ribs in corduroy fabric: fine-wale corduroy, wide-wale cord.
In shipbuilding, wales are thick planks running horizontally along a vessel's side for strength.
The verb means to raise welts or ridges, as by striking.
Wale is also a variant spelling of weal (a raised mark on skin). (Capitalized Wales is the country.)
