Cotton pile fabric
Velveteen is a cotton fabric made to imitate velvet, with a short, dense pile that gives it a soft, plush texture.
It's less expensive than true velvet and appears in clothing, upholstery, and children's toys: a velveteen jacket, the velveteen rabbit.
The word sometimes suggests something almost but not quite luxurious—an imitation of the real thing.
