Prince of Wales

British heir apparent

Prince of Wales is the title traditionally granted to the heir apparent to the British throne, typically the monarch's eldest son.

The title has been used since 1301, when Edward I bestowed it on his son after conquering Wales.

It is not automatic—each Prince of Wales must be formally created by the reigning monarch: Charles was Prince of Wales for over fifty years before becoming king.
