visiting card

Formal name paper

A visiting card is a small card bearing a person's name and sometimes address or title, presented when calling on someone or left as a record of having visited.

The practice belongs to formal social customs of the 18th and 19th centuries: She left her visiting card with the butler.

Now largely replaced by business card in professional contexts.
