desk blotter
Ink-absorbing surface pad
A desk blotter is a large pad of absorbent paper placed on a desktop, originally designed to dry wet ink from fountain pens.
Though the practical need has largely disappeared, desk blotters persist as decorative desk accessories, often leather-framed, serving as writing surfaces and protecting the desk beneath: He signed the contract on his leather desk blotter.
