videocassette recorder

Magnetic tape machine

A videocassette recorder, or VCR, is a device that plays and records video on magnetic tape housed in plastic cassettes.

VCRs dominated home video from the 1980s through the early 2000s, enabling viewers to record television programs and watch rented movies.

The technology became obsolete with the rise of DVDs and digital streaming.
