home movies
Amateur family recordings
Home movies are amateur films or videos made by ordinary people, typically documenting family life—birthdays, vacations, holidays, children growing up.
The term evokes a particular aesthetic: shaky handheld footage, poor lighting, authentic moments.
We spent the evening watching old home movies from the eighties.
Before smartphones, home movies required dedicated equipment and were often shot on 8mm film or VHS camcorders.
