soft-shell
Bendable outer covering
Soft-shell describes a creature whose shell is naturally soft or has recently molted and not yet hardened.
Soft-shell crabs and soft-shell turtles are culinary delicacies, prized because the shell can be eaten.
The term also applies to eggs with flexible rather than rigid shells, and to nuts with easily cracked shells.
Also spelled softshell.
