trolley car

Rail-bound city transport

A trolley car is an electric streetcar that runs on rails and draws power from an overhead wire through a trolley pole.

Common in American cities from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century, most systems were dismantled as buses and automobiles became dominant: The old trolley car lines have been converted to bike paths.

A few cities retain or have restored trolley service.
