transabdominal

Across the stomach

Transabdominal describes a medical procedure performed through the abdominal wall.

The term appears most often in obstetrics, where a transabdominal ultrasound uses a probe pressed against the belly to image the fetus, as opposed to a transvaginal approach.

Surgeons also perform transabdominal biopsies and other interventions by accessing organs through the abdomen.
