retractors

Tissue-holding surgical tools

Retractors are surgical instruments used to hold back tissue or organs, giving surgeons access to the area being operated on.

The term also refers to muscles that pull a body part backward or inward—the opposite of protractors.

More broadly, a retractor is anyone or anything that retracts: The company became a retractor of its earlier promises.
