peritoneum

Belly cavity membrane

The peritoneum is the thin membrane lining the abdominal cavity and covering most of the organs within it.

It has two layers: one attached to the abdominal wall, the other wrapping the organs.

The space between them contains fluid that reduces friction as organs move.

Inflammation of this membrane is peritonitis: The ruptured appendix caused peritonitis.
