tracheotomy
Emergency airway surgery
A tracheotomy is a surgical incision into the windpipe, typically to create an opening for a breathing tube when the airway is obstructed or a patient needs long-term mechanical ventilation.
The procedure and the resulting opening are both called a tracheotomy, though the opening itself is sometimes distinguished as a tracheostomy.
The doctor performed an emergency tracheotomy when the patient stopped breathing.
