decannulation
Removing the airway
Decannulation is the removal of a cannula—a tube inserted into the body for medical purposes.
The term most often refers to removing a tracheostomy tube from the throat once a patient can breathe independently: The patient was weaned from the ventilator and decannulation followed within days.
The process typically involves gradual steps to ensure the patient tolerates breathing without the tube.
