speaking valve
Tracheostomy speech device
A speaking valve is a one-way valve attached to a tracheostomy tube that allows air to enter through the tube but redirects exhaled air up through the vocal cords, enabling a person with a tracheostomy to speak.
Without such a valve, exhaled air exits directly through the tube, bypassing the larynx entirely.
The Passy-Muir valve is the most common brand: The therapist fitted him with a speaking valve so he could communicate with his family.
