retractor

Wound-opening medical tool

A retractor is a surgical instrument used to hold back tissue or organs, giving surgeons a clear view of the operating area: The nurse handed the retractor to the surgeon.

More generally, anything that retracts—pulls back or withdraws—can be called a retractor, including muscles that draw body parts inward.
