subglottic stenosis
Below-voicebox constriction
Subglottic stenosis is a narrowing of the airway just below the vocal cords.
The condition may be congenital or result from injury—particularly from prolonged intubation, when a breathing tube damages the tracheal lining.
Symptoms include noisy breathing, shortness of breath, and recurrent respiratory infections.
Treatment ranges from dilation procedures to surgical reconstruction.
