cricothyrotomy

Throat membrane incision

Cricothyrotomy is an emergency surgical procedure that creates an opening through the cricothyroid membrane in the throat to establish an airway when other methods fail.

A doctor might perform a cricothyrotomy when a patient's airway is completely blocked and intubation is impossible.

Also called cricothyroidotomy.
